What is a letterhead?

A letterhead is the heading or design at the top of a sheet of letter-size paper. Most letterheads include the sender’s name, address/contact details, and company logo. They may also feature a background pattern or utilize the space on the sidebar or footer for more details and designs. The word “letterhead” is often used to refer simply to the entire sheet of paper, instead of just the header itself.

How to make a letterhead?

The letterhead you design should represent your company well and be appropriate for the industry space you occupy. Keeping your branding strategy in mind, browse our catalog of letterhead templates to find one that meets both of those criteria. Open your chosen template in our online editor and switch the existing color palette to match your brand colors, then replace placeholder text with your individual name, contact details, and company name. Swap the sample logo (if applicable) with your own. Update or remove any other text that may appear in the template, such as a slogan or motto, and change the style, size, or color of the font. If necessary, easily add or replace shapes, icons, arrows, and images with just a few clicks. Once you’ve finished your customizations, give your project a final onceover to ensure nothing was missed. Now you’re ready to print!

Tip: Often times companies will create a letterhead that leaves a majority of the space on the design blank. This allows them to write on it with a pen or run it back through the printer when they have content they want to include. What is the standard size for a letterhead?

A standard letterhead size outside of North America is the A4 size (210mm x 297mm). Within North America, though, standard letterheads are printed at 8.5” x 11”. The letterhead design (or branding area) often occupies one or more of the following spaces: the header, footer, or left sidebar. There may also be other elements of the design surrounding the text. There is not a set standard for branding area size, but you should always ensure that the content of your letter can be easily read and that the letterhead design doesn’t detract from it.
