As of 1.0, launch window character, you can farm every one of Yinlin’s ascension materials the instant you first set foot in Wuthering Waves, from world boss exploration materials to Echoes. It does, however, have some amazing quality-of-life features that catapult it above and beyond its contemporaries and cement it as one of the best I’ve played.

How Enhanced Drop Rate Works in Wuthering Waves

Of all the less-explained mechanics in Wuthering Waves, the Enhanced Drop Rate system in the Databank has to be one of the most opaque. Sure, it sounds simple enough, and in practice, it actually is, but only once you understand it and how to best make use of it. I’ll be discussing both today.

What Enhanced Drop Rate Does in Wuthering Waves

At the bottom of the Databank screen, you’ll see a dropdown menu titled “Enhanced Drop Rate,” plus a percentage. The “enhancement,” in this case, is how often a particular enemy type drops an Echo when killed. Note the two categories within the Enhanced Drop Rate submenu: Target Class and Remaining Chances. In the simplest terms, the Target Class is the kind of enemy that has a better Echo drop rate, and the Remaining Chances are how many times that week you can expect better drop chances.

How to Farm Echo EXP in Wuthering Waves

One of the worst parts of any gacha game with equipment is upgrading said equipment. In Wuthering Waves, “equipment” is replaced with Echoes, and leveling them up not only increases their base stats but also allows you to add more stats to them. You will, unfortunately, need to farm Echo EXP to get them up to speed, and there are only a few ways to do that.

Early on in your Wuthering Waves adventure, you’ll have several different sources of Echo EXP, and they’ll be fairly plentiful. The more you progress, explore, and level your Echoes, you’ll quickly find that there are only a few renewable sources of the EXP items you need, and access to them is very limited. Either way, I’ll list all the main ways to get your hands on Echo EXP items in the game as of the 1.0 update and will update as new sources appear.

Why Wuthering Waves is Not Another Tower of Fantasy

Wuthering Waves wears its inspirations on its sleeve. It’s an open-world action RPG gacha game in the vein of Genshin Impact, with plenty of direct content pulls from the most successful title in the genre. Another game did something very similar several years ago: Tower of Fantasy, a more maligned entry in the gacha genre. Now, Wuthering Waves is drawing comparisons to Tower of Fantasy, but I don’t think the two are so easily equated. Here’s why.

Wuthering Waves is Not an MMO

As much as Wuthering Waves and Tower of Fantasy share with Genshin — exploration, character, and account progression, story beats — the biggest and most important difference is in both games’ core purpose. Tower of Fantasy was always billed as an MMO, meaning it needed to balance its content at least partly around multiple players. Every world boss in ToF all but required several dozen players to conquer with any efficiency, and the endgame content also had bosses with so much HP that it was effectively impossible for a player to solo them. With one exception: whales.
